Junius Gonzales

Junius Gonzales is the dean of the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute (FMHI) at the University of South Florida.  FMHI is one of the largest behavioral health research and training institutes in the country.   Gonzales served presviously as principal and scientist at Abt Associates, which Junius Gonazales in 2006 the American Marketing Association ranked 17th among the top 50 U.S. research firms and 22nd among global research firms. From 1999-2005, he served as the chief of the Services Research & Clinical Epidemiology Branch and as acting director for the Division of Services & Intervention Research at the National Institute of Mental Health. A psychiatrist and health services researcher with an M.D. with honors from the University of Pennsylvania, Gonzales acquired critical clinical operations and research experience at Georgetown University (GU), and then moved into national research and science policy administration and complex project oversight at NIH. During his tenure there he also received an MBA with honors from the University of Maryland.   He did his residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School and fellowship training at the National Institutes of Health.

From his work on the Executive Committee of GU’s Institute for Health Care Research and Policy to his cross-agency work while at NIH for which he received the DHHS Secretary’s Award, Gonzales is recognized for his capabilities to bring together diverse constituents for mixed motive partnerships and complex research efforts. For example, while at GU he built a strong external network of academic and community research collaborators, including Johns Hopkins University, a large loosely knit IPA, and public health sites.  And, while at Abt, Gonzales, provided leadership across all practices in the Health Division, worked with other divisions for added value, and intersected with the private sector health and business consulting practices.
