The National Research Council argued in 2007 that,” the United States faces real risks that adversaries will exploit vulnerabilities in the nation’s critical information systems, thereby causing considerable suffering and damage.” In a concerted effort to address this issue, the Park City Center for Public Policy and Imadgen LLC present Defending Cyberspace™ 2008 to be held at the Ronald Reagan International Trade Center in Washington, DC on May 6-7, 2008 This symposium is being convened due to the urgent nature of our critical infrastructure and the impact on our future economic and national security. General James E Cartwright, Commander, United States Strategic Command testified before the House Armed Services Committee in March 2007 stating that “America is under widespread attack in cyberspace. Our freedom to use cyberspace is threatened by the actions of criminals, terrorists, and nations alike… The magnitude of cost, in terms of real dollars dedicated to defensive measures, lost intellectual capital and fraud cannot be overestimated… Unlike the air, land and sea domains, we lack dominance in cyberspace and could grow increasingly vulnerable if we do not fundamentally change how we view this battle-space.”

This symposium will be convened to address the mounting issues faced by corporate America in preparing for and defending against foreign-based threats to their intellectual property, financial assets, and strategic initiatives. The conference will focus on the nature of the threat and techniques to counter the threat, as well as opportunities to open the discussion and share best practices and methods to address confidentiality and secrecy. Recommendations will be assembled in a white paper to be submitted to the incoming Administration.

The symposium is kicked off with a VIP Networking session on the evening of May 6th followed on the 7th by an intensive one-day symposium. This event brings together key players – CEOs,CIOs, CISOs and policy makers from industry and government to develop a strategy for deterring cyber attacks.

Confirmed speakers for the conference include: Governor John Engler, President, National Association of Manufacturers; Greg Garcia, Assistant Secretary for Cyber Security and Communications, DHS National Protection and Programs Directorate; Thomas W. Shelman, President, IT Group, Northrop Grumman; Cathy Allen, President and CEO, Santa Fe Group; Steve Malphrus Staff Director for Management, US Federal Reserve Board; Governor Jim Hodges, CEO, Hodges Consulting Group; Phil Bond, President and CEO, Information Technology Association of America; and Governor Jim Geringer, Director, ESRI.
