Enlibra Toolkit

The Oquirrh Institute has developed a Toolkit that demonstrates how Enlibra-an environmental management philosophy that stresses balance, stewardship, innovation, and collaboration-can be used to address complex environmental issues. The Toolkit, which has been course-adopted by several universities, describes an array of techniques and lessons learned from projects at the local, state, multi-state, and national levels. It was designed to help local planners, agency managers, industry decision makers, elected officials, public interest groups, and academics find new ways to address environmental problems. The Institute intends to publish a second edition based on feedback from users.

Tools for the Conservation of Essential Ranchlands
The Oquirrh Institute's Ranchland Conservation project was prompted by the recognition that vital wildlife, water quality, and scenic values are being threatened by explosive growth of western communities and resorts, and sprawl from western cities. Working with landowners, the Institute is examining how the Enlibra principles can be employed to conserve ranches and associated wildlife, water quality, and scenic values, while still realizing economic benefits. The pilot projects are privately funded by participating landowners.

Smart Energy Development and Conservation
Since the 1970s, growing energy demand and global security concerns have combined to make energy one of the top action items for policy makers and economic leaders. At the same time, environmental risks from energy development and consumption have continued to rise, leading to divisive policy debates and confusion over the merits of various energy strategies. Employing the Enlibra principles, the Oquirrh Institute is working to engineer models that demonstrate how political leaders and communities can reach common ground with energy producers and conservation interests to speed the development of comprehensive, balanced solutions to the nation's energy demands. The Institute is discussing this initiative with major power producers.
