MEXICO
The second mission—to Mexico—was equally impressive. Oquirrh Institute members enjoyed a private introduction to President Vicente Fox and participated in several diplomatic discussions on education, the environment, and foreign affairs. Ballet Folklorico de Mexico provided an evening of colorful entertainment, and the delegation learned of the rich history of Mexico at the Anthropology and History Museum.
An incredible showpiece project has come out of the Mexico foreign mission. The pilot project will be a cooperative effort between Mexico and Utah to track the educational progress of children of migrant farm workers while in Utah. Documentation will be sent back to Mexico so these students can be credited with the education they have received. Most noteworthy about this program is that the children will be evaluated based on competency levels rather than on seat time or credit hours.
