UNITED KINGDOM

Environment. Energy. Economy. These three words sum up, in a nutshell, the critical issues examined during the Oquirrh Institute's whirlwind foreign mission to the United Kingdom in August. And after meeting with an impressive lineup of eminent business and political leaders of the U.K.
(click here for detailed list), guests of the Institute have a few more "E" words to add to the list—Enlightening, Engaging, and Educational.

It would be impossible in this short space to do justice to the conferences we held with each of our various experts and presenters (for summaries of each event, please click here); but suffice it to say, all in attendance came away with much to think about. To whet your appetite, topics ranged from how the war on terrorism is affecting the oil market—to why it is imperative for Americans to become more educated on Middle Eastern culture—all the way to the challenges encountered in developing sustainable energy sources for Europe and the United States.

In addition to the well-prepared UK presenters, Oquirrh Institute Senior Fellow Brad Barber also contributed to the exchange of ideas with his presentations to the esteemed attendees on how the Enlibra principles can be incorporated into the development of sustainable energy development. He emphasized the Enlibra principles of “Markets Before Mandates” and “Collaboration, Not Polarization.”

Although the focus of this mission was definitely educational, the Oquirrh contingent found time for elegant dining (including the Road Hole Grill and the Sands Private Restaurant at St. Andrews), enchanting surroundings (touring Edinburgh's Glamis Castle—childhood home of the Queen Mother), and exceptional entertainment (opening night at the Edinburgh International Festival featuring Utah’s own Ballet West, as well as Edinburgh Castle’s traditional Military Tattoo). Oh yes, and golf at Dukes, Gleneagles, and St. Andrews’ Old Course—the home of golf.

And in the end, all agreed it was another "E" word—an Extraordinary opportunity.
